A doormat helps reduce the amount of dirt and dust that comes into the premises whether its your home, work, school, or other establishment. When people walk through the doormat, even if they don't consciously rub the soles of their shoes on the doormat, some of the dirt and dust gets trapped into the doormat. A doormat is specially useful if the shoes just walk through mud or wet grounds.
Placing a doormat both inside and outside the door is a good practice. The outside doormat helps reduce the larger debris whilst the inside doormat helps remove the remaining debris thereby reducing the chances of dirt spreading inside.
