Pencils most of the time have their pencil lead grade indicated on the pencil. The 2 main grading scales are the HB scale and the numerical scale. H means hardness of the lead - the higher the number, the harder the lead, the lighter and cleaner the lines which architects and engineers love. B means blackness - the softer the lead, the higher the number, the heavier the lines which artists love. A combination of HB means the pencil is hard and black which is the middle of the scale equivalent to #2 pencil in the US numbering system. This is the most commonly used in schools.
